Hybrid inverters are chosen primarily by people who want to make better use of the energy from their own PV system. Instead of feeding most of the surplus back into the grid, they can use it for current household consumption or, after adding an energy storage unit, save it for later. This higher self-consumption is one of the most common reasons for choosing a hybrid solution.

The second important reason is preparing the system for an energy storage unit in the future. Many people do not want to invest in a battery right away, but they want the system to be ready for expansion in a year or two. In this sense, a hybrid inverter can be a “future-proof” solution, because it simplifies the later addition of storage and provides more flexibility than a conventional on-grid inverter.

Another motivation is greater control over how the system operates and how much energy is fed into the grid. In practice, users care not only about producing electricity, but also about more predictable management of surplus energy, limiting energy fed into the grid, and better aligning the system’s operation with household consumption. For some investors, emergency functions are also important. Some hybrid inverters can work with an energy storage unit in such a way that, during a power outage, they can keep selected household circuits running. This is an important argument especially where the user wants to secure the refrigerator, internet, lighting, or a few of the most important devices. It should be remembered, however, that the scope of such support depends on the specific model and configuration, and the term “hybrid” itself does not always mean full backup power for the entire building. For some devices, additional modules that cooperate with the hybrid inverter are also installed.

When the topic of heating prices comes up among friends, it often leads to a discussion about which method is cheap and which is expensive. You will often hear that electricity is expensive or that gas is cheap. Such claims usually rely on the energy price on the meter, not on what it costs to produce heat that actually warms the home. So what is useful heat? It is the portion of energy that, after passing through the heating appliance, truly reaches the installation, raising the temperature in living spaces. The rest is lost as waste or escapes during combustion and the device’s own operation. That is why comparing the prices of gas, electricity, or heating oil on their own does not make much sense. After all, different heating systems have different efficiencies. A gas boiler delivers about 92% of the fuel’s energy to the home, while an oil boiler and a pellet boiler deliver about 88%. Electric resistance heating comes closest to 100%. This means, roughly, that 1 kWh of electricity is about 1 kWh of heat.

A heat pump works differently-it does not generate heat from electricity, but transfers it. In practice, this means that two people using different heat sources may pay similar amounts for the energy itself, yet their bills will still differ. One buys 1 kWh and gets almost 1 kWh of heat, while the other, using a heat pump, can obtain several kWh of heat from 1 kWh of electricity.

Whether a heat pump is quiet or loud depends primarily on where the sound source is located. The loudest will be devices that perform most of their work outdoors. This way we can hear the compressor and the fan working in the open air. Heat pumps enclosed in technical rooms will behave much more quietly. The devices that require the most attention are those that have an outdoor unit. It is the most audible to the surroundings—this applies to both air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps. Ground-source heat pumps, on the other hand, do not need an outdoor fan—their operation takes place mainly inside the building. Here, proper soundproofing of the technical room and correct decoupling of vibrations from the floor and walls are important. 

A separate category includes systems with several units, also called cascades. Here, there may be a risk of sound adding up from each unit. More often, there is also a situation in which one unit goes to higher speeds while the others operate steadily and calmly. It is important to prepare the design of the system layout and its control well.

Overpaneling refers to installing a photovoltaic array with a higher DC power capacity than the nominal AC power output of the inverter. In other words, the solar panels are intentionally oversized in comparison to the inverter’s rating. The key parameter here is the DC-to-AC ratio, which tells us how much total panel power (DC) is connected to how much inverter power (AC). For example, if a 7 kW DC array is connected to a 5 kW AC inverter, the DC-to-AC ratio is 1.4. Increasing this ratio allows the system to produce more usable power during most daylight hours, especially in the morning, late afternoon, or during cloudy conditions. As a result, the inverter spends more time operating close to its peak efficiency rather than underloaded.
